In the night

4 7 8 breathing before you argue with the moment

In for four, hold for seven, out for eight, four rounds

3 min

How to do it

  1. 1Breathe in for 4 counts
  2. 2Hold for 7 counts
  3. 3Breathe out for 8 counts
  4. 4Repeat 4 times

Breathe in through the nose for four counts, hold for seven, out through the mouth for eight, with a soft whoosh. Four rounds. Use it before a hard conversation or when you're lying awake and your mind won't slow down.

What the evidence says

The long, slow exhale in this pattern is what does the work, activating the vagus nerve and nudging your nervous system out of alert mode, the same mechanism behind the paced breathing research. It won't shorten a flash, the randomized trial on breathing for flashes found no benefit over a music placebo, so this is filed as a calm down tool, not a treatment.
