Should I get my hormones tested?

20 September 2026

This is the question we get asked most. A woman is tired, not sleeping, snapping at everyone, and she wants a number that proves something is happening.

For most women over 45, a hormone blood test will not give her that. Hormone levels swing from week to week in perimenopause. A test is one reading on one morning, so a normal result does not mean you are fine, and a low one does not settle anything either.

That is why menopause guidelines, in the US and the UK alike, say perimenopause in women over 45 should be worked out from your age, your cycle and what has changed, rather than from a blood test.

Tests do matter for some women. Under 45 the picture is different, and tests for iron and thyroid are worth having if you are exhausted, because those are real causes with real treatments.

What the study says · Not proven

A one off hormone test is not a reliable way to tell where you are in perimenopause. It is one reading of something that moves constantly. Mail order panels that promise a clear answer are selling more certainty than the test can give.

One thing to try this week

Write down the date your last three periods started, and how heavy each one was. That short list tells a doctor more than most panels do, and it costs nothing.
