Research Context

Research context compiled from published sources

How does Zinc work?

Serves as a cofactor for enzymes including 5-alpha reductase (androgen metabolism), deiodinases (thyroid hormone conversion), superoxide dismutase (antioxidant defence), and alkaline phosphatase (bone mineralisation). Also supports insulin signalling and immune cell function (T-lymphocyte maturation).

Research Depth

Well Studied

Extensive human research over many years, including randomized controlled trials.

Long-Term Evidence

Well Characterized

Decades of long-term safety data available from human use.

Known Interactions
Antibiotics (quinolones, tetracyclines — reduce absorption, separate by 2 hours)Copper supplements (excess zinc depletes copper — consider 15:1 zinc:copper ratio)Iron supplements (competitive absorption — take separately)Penicillamine (reduced absorption)
Reported Contraindicated Populations
Copper deficiency (prolonged high-dose zinc depletes copper stores)
Published Dose Ranges
730 mg/dayoral · once daily
NHS/clinical trials

Dose ranges from published research. Individual dosing should be determined with your healthcare provider based on your specific circumstances.
