Vitamin K2

Also known as: Menaquinone-7, MK-7, vitamin K2 MK-7

A fat-soluble vitamin that plays a role in calcium metabolism, directing calcium into bones and teeth rather than soft tissues and arteries. Often taken alongside vitamin D3 and calcium for bone health. Increasingly recognised for cardiovascular health in postmenopausal women.

Research Context

Research context compiled from published sources

How does Vitamin K2 work?

Activates osteocalcin (which binds calcium to bone matrix) and matrix Gla protein (which prevents arterial calcification). Without adequate vitamin K2, these proteins remain inactive and calcium may deposit in arteries rather than bones. Works synergistically with vitamin D3, which increases calcium absorption.
