10-Minute Balance & Stability

Balance training is one of the most undervalued forms of exercise for women over 40 — proprioception naturally declines with age, and training it back is completely possible.

10 min · Kit: A wall or sturdy chair for support

The session

  1. 11 min: Two-foot standing — eyes closed for 10 sec intervals, then open
  2. 22 min: Single-leg stand — 30 sec each side × 2; use wall if needed
  3. 32 min: Tandem stance (heel-to-toe line) — 30 sec each way × 2
  4. 42 min: Single-leg stand with arm movements — slowly raise and lower arms while balancing
  5. 52 min: Forward reach balance — stand on one foot, slowly reach forward with opposite hand
  6. 61 min: Eyes-closed single leg — carefully; use wall if needed

Worth knowing

  • Focus on a fixed point on the wall to support balance — this is called a gaze anchor
  • Wobbling is normal and is the training stimulus — using the wall is smart, not weak
  • Balance training is a genuine fall-prevention strategy — worth 10 minutes a few times per week
  • Soft knees (slightly bent) are better than locked knees when balancing
