20-Minute Step Box Cardio

Step cardio delivers impact loading to the hip and femur — exactly where bone density support matters most for women in midlife.

20 min · Kit: Sturdy step, low box, or bottom stair

The session

  1. 13 min: Basic step up and down — lead with right, then left
  2. 23 min: V-step — step wide onto box, step back in
  3. 33 min: Over the top — step across the box and down the other side
  4. 43 min: Straddle step — both feet straddle the box, step on and off
  5. 53 min: Add arm variations to each movement
  6. 63 min: Cool-down: step off, slow marching, calf stretch
  7. 72 min: Stretch

Worth knowing

  • Step height could allow a comfortable step-up — typically 10–20 cm
  • Always step fully onto the platform before bringing the second foot
  • Arms drive heart rate — use them actively throughout
  • Step aerobics has a well-documented history of cardiovascular benefit; it was popular in the 90s for good reason
