20-Minute Flexibility Journey: Working Toward Splits
Working toward splits is a patience practice as much as a flexibility practice — the steady, consistent approach is always the one that actually gets there.
20 min · Kit: Yoga mat, Yoga blocks (2), Optional: strap
The session
- 13 min: Hip flexor lunge — low lunge, hold 2 min each side, breathe
- 23 min: Hamstring stretch — seated or standing, long hold
- 33 min: Pigeon pose each side — 2 min per side; fully supported with blocks if needed
- 43 min: Half-splits — from low lunge, extend front leg and hinge forward
- 53 min: Full range slides toward splits — support weight on hands; go only as far as comfortable
- 65 min: Restorative close — child's pose, supine twist, savasana
Worth knowing
- Full front splits require both hip flexor length on the back leg and hamstring length on the front — this session addresses both
- Progress in flexibility takes months, not weeks — chronic mild discomfort in the stretch is fine, sharp or nerve pain is not
- Prop use (blocks, strap) allows the mind to relax out of the stretch rather than gripping against it
- Splits are not a goal in themselves — the journey builds hip health that serves everything else
