Alcohol and the midlife gut

The change many women notice first, and the one they are least keen to hear about.

What changes

Alcohol irritates the gut lining, affects how quickly things move, and is a common trigger for reflux. Many women describe tolerating it noticeably less well from their forties.

It also disrupts sleep, which loops back into almost everything else in this stage.

A reasonable position

Nothing here is asking you to give it up. Most women who change something here move it rather than stop it: fewer nights, earlier in the evening, and not on an empty stomach.

If bloating or reflux is the main complaint, a two weeks without it is one of the quicker ways to find out how much of it is involved.

The gut is one of the few places in this stage where small, ordinary changes to what you eat reliably show up within weeks.
