Saying it

Telling the people around you

What to say to a partner, a teenager or a manager when your fuse is shorter than it was.

Why it is worth doing

Unexplained short temper gets read as being about the person in front of you. Explained short temper does not.

Most of the damage women describe from this stage is not the anger itself. It is months of everyone quietly deciding what it meant.

What tends to land

Name it before it happens rather than after. A sentence in a calm moment does more than an apology in a difficult one.

Say what it is and what it is not. Something like: my patience is genuinely shorter at the moment, it is not about you, and I am dealing with it.

Ask for one specific thing rather than general understanding. A quiet half hour after work is actionable. Being more patient with me is not.

With teenagers, less explanation and more warning tends to work better.

At work

You are not obliged to disclose anything. If you choose to, describing the effect rather than the cause usually gets further: needing meetings earlier in the day, or fewer interruptions in the afternoon.

There is more on the work side of this in the Life section.

Lowering the daily stress load protects the brain and heart as much as it changes how today feels.
