Capacity

Spending a smaller budget on purpose

When there is genuinely less to go around, choosing where it goes beats trying to make more of it.

The reframe most women arrive at eventually

For a stretch of years there may simply be less capacity than there was, and no amount of organizing creates more of it.

What does change things is deciding in advance where it goes, instead of spending it on whatever asks loudest and finding there is nothing left for the parts of the day that matter.

What that looks like in practice

Naming the two or three things a day is actually for, and letting the rest be done badly or not at all.

Front-loading anything that needs a clear head, because for most women that is the morning now.

Building in the recovery rather than hoping for it. A gap between the working day and the evening is not indulgence, it is what makes the evening possible.

Saying no earlier. The cost of a reluctant yes is paid three weeks later by a version of you who has less to spend than you did when you agreed.

A note on the guilt

Almost every woman who describes this describes feeling lazy alongside it, usually while doing more than anyone around her.

Reduced capacity in a body going through a significant hormonal change is not a character flaw, and the women who get through this stage well are mostly the ones who stopped treating it as one.

Energy is the thing every other change in these years is paid for out of. Protecting it is what makes the rest possible.
