Introduction to Barbell Back Squat (45 min)
The barbell back squat is considered one of the most efficient exercises for loading the entire lower body and spine — meaningful for bone density and strength alike.
45 min · Kit: Barbell and rack, risk context bars or a spotter
The session
- 15 min: Hip mobility warm-up and goblet squat (bodyweight then light DB)
- 23×10: Barbell squat with empty bar (20 kg) — focus on bar position, stance, depth
- 33×8: Add weight (50–60% of estimated effort)
- 43×6: Working weight — challenging but form maintained throughout
- 53×5: Optional heavy set if form is solid
- 63×15: Leg press (machine) — complementary volume
- 75 min: Hip flexor and hamstring stretch; foam roll
Worth knowing
- Bar position: high bar sits on upper traps; low bar sits across rear delts — both are valid, try both
- Depth: aim for parallel (thighs horizontal) before adding weight
- Always use the risk context pins when squatting alone — this is non-negotiable
- Women who train barbell squats consistently develop hip and thigh strength that is visibly functional
