20-Minute Functional Movement Practice

Training the movements of real life is the most direct way to maintain independence, confidence, and physical resilience as the years pass.

20 min · Kit: None (optional: moderate dumbbells)

The session

  1. 13 min: Turkish get-up practice (bodyweight only) — lying to standing via several positions; 3 reps each side
  2. 23 min: Farmer's carry — hold heavy items (bags of books) and walk across the room
  3. 33 min: Single-leg stand reaching for an object from a low shelf (simulate reaching)
  4. 43 min: Step over an object — slow and deliberate; both legs leading
  5. 53 min: Sit to stand from different heights — floor, low chair, normal chair
  6. 63 min: Overhead reach with control — reaching up and bringing back down with straight arms
  7. 72 min: Balance and coordination: tandem walking (heel-to-toe) across the room

Worth knowing

  • Functional fitness training prepares the body for actual life — not just for exercise sessions
  • The Turkish get-up is one of the most comprehensive single exercises in existence — it appears in rehabilitation and strength training alike
  • Carrying heavy loads (grocery bags, shopping) is a legitimate functional fitness challenge
  • Getting up from the floor unaided is independently correlated with longevity outcomes in research
