10-Minute Stair Climbing Cardio

Stairs are free, accessible, and one of the most useful pieces of equipment in the home — using them intentionally takes very little time.

10 min · Kit: A staircase (indoor or outdoor)

The session

  1. 12 min: Easy up and down warm-up; slow and steady
  2. 22 min: Normal pace up, slower pace down; continuous
  3. 32 min: Skipping steps (one step at a time on the way up; every other step for challenge)
  4. 42 min: Side-step ascent (face the banister, step up sideways leading with each leg alternately)
  5. 52 min: Final easy cool-down pace; slow stretches at the bottom

Worth knowing

  • Stair climbing has a higher metabolic cost than flat walking at the same pace
  • The descent is weight-bearing and eccentric — go slowly and carefully
  • Hold the banister whenever you need to; this is not cheating
  • Building stair tolerance helps with daily life energy and functional fitness
