Honestly

Caffeine, honestly

It is not the villain, and it is not free either. Where it genuinely helps and where it quietly costs.

What it does

Caffeine blocks the signal that makes you feel sleepy. It does not create energy, it postpones the awareness of not having any.

That is genuinely useful. It is also why the tiredness it hides tends to arrive later, larger.

The part that changes in these years

Caffeine has a long half-life, meaning a meaningful amount of an afternoon coffee is still circulating at bedtime. Many women describe becoming noticeably more sensitive to it in their forties.

If your sleep is already lighter, that matters more than it used to, because it lands on a night with less margin in it.

A reasonable middle

Most women who change one thing here move the cut-off earlier rather than giving it up, and describe better nights within a two weeks.

Giving up entirely is a bigger change than it sounds and comes with a few rough days. It is worth knowing that in advance rather than discovering it on a Tuesday.

Energy is the thing every other change in these years is paid for out of. Protecting it is what makes the rest possible.
