Also known as: Cholecalciferol, Vitamin D, VitD3
The most biologically active supplemental form of Vitamin D. Essential for calcium absorption, bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. The NHS recommends all adults consider supplementing, particularly in autumn and winter. Especially important for perimenopausal and postmenopausal women given the role in bone density.

7 reports from women who tried Vitamin D3
My vitamin D was severely deficient (18 nmol/L) and my GP prescribed high-dose D3. After 3 months it had risen to 72 nmol/L. I can't see bone changes that quickly obviously, but my GP explained that adequate vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone remodelling. I feel better overall and will keep monitoring.
Testing showed I was severely vitamin D deficient, which was certainly contributing to my low mood. Correcting this improved my mood noticeably over three months — the chronic low-grade depression lightened. I'd recommend vitamin D testing as a first step for anyone experiencing mood changes in perimenopause.
Blood tests showed I was severely vitamin D deficient, which was likely contributing to my brain fog. After correcting the deficiency with high-dose supplementation the mental cloudiness improved gradually over three months. I'd recommend anyone with unexplained brain fog get their vitamin D tested.
After testing showed I was deficient in vitamin D I added it alongside my magnesium. The combination improved my sleep quality modestly — less time lying awake and slightly better mood on waking. It's not transformative but both are things I should be taking for general health anyway.
My blood tests showed I was very deficient in vitamin D, so I started supplementing at a high dose. My overall energy improved which helped me cope better, but I can't say it directly reduced my endo pain. I think correcting the deficiency was the right thing to do but it's not a treatment on its own.
My baseline bloods showed low vitamin D and I added omega-3 for its anti-inflammatory effect. Over three months my cycles became marginally more regular and the inflammation markers in my blood tests improved. It's a foundational protocol rather than a primary PCOS treatment but important as a base.
Started the magnesium and vitamin D stack after reading about their role in hormonal health. My sleep improved noticeably after about three weeks and the low mood lifted somewhat. It's not a cure but for me it's provided a solid foundation alongside the dietary changes I was already making.
Research context compiled from published sources
Cholecalciferol is converted in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D and then in the kidneys to the active form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). Calcitriol promotes intestinal calcium absorption, regulates parathyroid hormone, modulates immune cell function, and influences over 1,000 genes.
Well Studied
