Selenium

Also known as: selenomethionine, sodium selenite, selenium supplement

An essential trace mineral important for thyroid function, immune health, and antioxidant defence. The UK RNI is 60mcg/day for women. Particularly relevant for women with thyroid conditions, as selenium is required for the conversion of T4 to active T3. Some evidence for reducing thyroid antibodies in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Research Context

Research context compiled from published sources

How does Selenium work?

Incorporated into selenoproteins including glutathione peroxidase (antioxidant defence), iodothyronine deiodinases (T4 to T3 conversion), and thioredoxin reductase (redox balance). In the thyroid, selenium supports hormone conversion and protects thyroid cells from oxidative damage. May modulate immune response in autoimmune thyroiditis.
